A special dividend by BHP Billiton.
As I already wrote in November 2018 in my post BHP announces US$10.4 billion shareholder return program, BHP Billiton plans to return US$10.4 billion to its shareholders through the combination of an off-market buy-back and a special dividend.
Because I own ADR’s, I was not be eligible to participate in the off-market buy-back. But hey, you can’t have it all in life. I did receive the special dividend!
Last week BBL has paid me a nice amount of dividend. They have paid me a special dividend of $1.02 per share. On December 17, 2018 BHP Billiton announced a super dividend of $1.02 per share. Because BBL-ADR consists of two shares of BHP, the dividend for BBL will be $2.04 cents. The special dividend was payable on January 30, 2019 to stockholders of record holding shares at the close of business on January 10, 2019.
BHP chief financial officer Peter Beaven: “We are pleased to have completed the off-market buy-back which, together with the special dividend, will deliver on our commitment to return the net proceeds from the sale of our onshore US assets to our shareholders, Completion of this program will bring total cash returned to shareholders to $US21 billion over the last two years.”
My Vrijheid Fonds consist of 30 shares of BBL, and therefore I will receive €53.46 ($61.20) in special dividend.
My projected annual total amount from my shares of BBL in 2019 will be €118 after taxes.
I love these kinds of special dividends!
