Foreword – Series Teaching my kids

To my daughters,

I remember it like yesterday. When the doctor said, it’s a girl! Man I was on top of the world but at the same time I also was a little bit scared. I’m a boy and what do I know about daughters?

But very soon these worries were over. The moment I saw you, I fell in love. Both of you are the most precious gift I ever had and took care of. And after all these years, I’m still overwhelmed with love for you. It is fatherly love, a love that I did not know before. It’s a love that wants to protect you as well as give your freedom to make your own decisions and choose your own path. You, as every child, should make your own mistakes. I believe that that’s the way we learn.

I know that growing up can be difficult. And the bigger you get, the bumpier the ride will be. For young girls, life can be difficult. Although I tell you every day that I love you and how beautiful you are, you probably will experience uncertainties about your life and your appearance. And in your teenage years you probably don’t want to hear these things from me anymore. I’m fine with that, that’s life and I hope it will be just a phase 😉

You will have to deal with group pressure. All your friends do it, so why not you? And yes, we will argue about these things. I can imagine that you will be mad with me when I say you’re too young for a boyfriend or you are too young to go out. But always remember that I do this because I love you and I want to prevent you from danger. Remember that every time I tell you, you “should not”, I really mean, “I love you, I want you to be safe.”

And when your teenage years go by, always remember that all girls will become a woman and everybody, sooner or later, will go through some uncertain and some hard times. This only makes your stronger. Believe in your self, and don’t be afraid to ask help. There is no doubt in my mind that you will be a strong, independent, beautiful and unique woman.

In life, try to find your passion and where your hart lies. Keep looking around until you find what you really want to do, for yourself and the world. Listen to yourself; trust your instincts and intuition. Always try to make decisions with your head, hart and stomach. I think that’s the way to make great and good decisions. In your search in life, look for happiness in the first place. Don’t look for appreciation, status or wealth.

Always be critical, ask questions and think independently- even about things that everybody believes that are true.

And always remember that you are not alone! There is always someone watching over you and loving you. I truly believe you can be anything you want to be. And always know that I will support you, the best I can, on your journey to adulthood. Never forget that no matter what the mistake is, how you choose to live your life, whatever you decide to do, I will always be there for you. I will always love you unconditionally!

And I know that the day will come when you want to spread your wings and leave the nest. And when that day comes, I hope I learned you about the things in life that helps you in your journey.

With this series I try to educate you on personal finance and investing. I wish I had the same when I was young. So this is why I started this series. I think when you educate kids about money, they will benefit from it for the rest of their lives. Or as the saying goes: “What is learned in the cradle is carried to the tomb”. And to educate your kid is your responsibility as a parent.

I try my best, and yes I make mistakes. But everything I do, I do with love and devotion (with the best interest for you in mind).

Girls: I love you!!
